CONTROVERSIAL plans for a £10 million luxury hotel complex on West Kirby's seafront have been unveiled.

If approved, the town will get its own version of Liverpool's award-winning Hope Street Hotel after contracts were signed this week with developers Carpenter Investments Ltd.

The hotel complex on Dee Lane's car park site, will include a restaurant, bar, spa and conference facilities together with additional retail provision at ground floor level.

A new sailing school and high quality hotel would be built, and the existing sailing school replaced with a new building. There would also be a separate boat storage building and additional retail unit and café.

Carpenter Investments Ltd is working on their proposals in more detail. The company was co-founded by David Brewitt, owner and operator of the Hope Street Hotel in Liverpool and Alan Beer, director of Beers Timber and Building Supplies Ltd.

Proposed plan would protect Iowa Counties from bicyclist lawsuits

A proposal that would provide some protections to counties when bicyclists use those county roads is making its way through the Iowa Legislature this session. The proposal is receiving a rather high profile after one family sued Crawford County over a bicycling accident. In that case, the bicyclist was competing in RAGBRAI, an annual, multi-day bicycle event that travels from border to border and attracts thousands of participants. If a bill offering counties some sort of protection is not passed, some have openly wondered about the future of the event, sponsored by the Des Moines Register. “The truth of the matter is I haven't even seen it [the bill] yet," said Rep. Lance Horbach, R-Tama. “I'm working on some other things that are taking a lot of my time." RAGBRAI will be making an overnight stop in Horbach's hometown this year.

Tilbury outgunned by improving Northwood

THOUGH Tilbury have played much worse than this, they found themselves deservedly beaten at a muddy, windswept Chadfields this afternoon.

Still on a high from the midweek relegation battle win at Ilford, Dockers certainly edged the first half of this Ryman Division One North but in the second half they missed a glorious chance, then were ruthlessly put to the sword by a side able to up their pace, tempo and skill levels.

Pre-match the focus of attention was on each side's young striker. Kurt Smith has collected 18 goals this season but he is eclipsed by Northwood's exciting young marksman Elliott Buchanan who has garnered 21.

Barnet boss Paul Fairclough was among those attracted to watch Buchanan but it proved a wasted trip as the youngster injured himself ten minutes into the match, his enthusiasm taking him into a clash with Tilbury keeper Paul Agu and he came off worst, picking up a damaged knee.

Wayne Henning: Stadium's future rests in hands of city, residents

Roberts Stadium has served our community well for more than 50 years. However, it has become dated and is no longer competitive with similar venues.

We have a difficult decision to make about the future of the stadium, and it is a decision that will be made with deliberate thought.

Obama stays close in race as Republican rivals lag

We need a new kind of leader, a leader who combines strength and wisdom, self-confidence and respect for other human beings.

We need a leader who can really SEE what is going on, LISTEN to his conscience and BRING along with him the people - the stakeholders for each decision.

Mr Obama is that kind of leader.

Looking at their leadership styles I would sum it up this way:

Mrs Clinton could be a good general.

Mr Obama could be a great Commander-in-Chief.

Can't you all just get along?

Here was unanimity on child-rearing technique. Holding the baby diagonally on my chest would give him crooked posture. Letting his legs or arms or head go bare was an invitation to ruin. Around us, Beijing children squatted down and defecated on the sidewalk, while parents cast a disapproving eye at our baby's exposed toes.

Now we had new sources of information, but there was no chance for us to absorb it in whole. Our practical introduction to the books started at the back, in the indexes, where the crisis of the moment might be: "Spitting up, 104-105, 389, 691"; "Rashes. See also Eczema; impetigo"; "Vaporizers, 666-667, 684."

Before long, we began to notice that the answers to our questions depended on which book we were consulting. About that vaporizer - or is it a humidifier? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a cool-mist humidifier, because hot-mist vaporizers can scald babies.
