Pitching in

On a recent afternoon, two kids played basketball at the eastern end of North Harford Park, off Hamlet Avenue. At the other end, on Laurelton Avenue, two school buses slowed a stop and a dozen kids poured out. They milled around a nearby apartment complex for a while, teasing and chasing each other.

Sitting between the two scenes is a pair of vacant baseball fields - or what used to be baseball fields. Or, if Stephen Johnson and Shane Scott are successful in their mission, what will soon be baseball fields again.

Track World Cup 06-07 Round 1 - CDM

Asked whether he was worried about Queally's 1.02.362, set on a bunch bike with no tri-bars, Hoy replied, "I don't really think about the times when I'm up there, but that was a really impressive ride from Jason considering he's been on a similar program to me".

Hoy will now focus on the team sprint but also mentioned a proposed trip to Bolivia for an attempt on Arnaud Tournant's world kilo record of 58.875, due to take place after next year's world track championships. "I wouldn't be going out there if I didn't think I could break the record. It's an amazing record but the track is virtually on the moon, so that makes a huge difference," he said.

Tim Veldt of the Netherlands, riding in the same heat as Hoy, took the bronze medal in 1.03.314 while home favourite Joel Leonard finished sixth after riding a fast opening lap but fading in the closing stages.

Kevin Allen: Disappointed Wings didn't get Fedorov, but Stuart a good ...

To me its a mixed bag. I really am disappointed in the team that they didnt make an effort to get Sergei Fedorov, I think they poked around there, but when you see what Fedorov went for, I just think they decided there was mixed reviews to decide to bring him in. They decided they liked their group up front. I disagree. I thought he would be a nice fit in there.

On Brad Stuart:

I do like what they did on defense, after the big boys (Dan Boyle, who was re-signed, and Rob Blake, who did not want to waive his no-trade clause), I thought that Brad Stuart was the best of that group and when you give only a couple draft picks, and not a first rounder, and you get a two-way defenseman with a little bit of grit and size and can move the puck, I think you made a pretty good move.

Local velodrome group wants six-day cycling event

If Tim Anderson and the Fort Collins Velodrome Association get their wish, Fort Collins will soon see a six-day track cycling event on the Oval at Colorado State University.

Anderson and the association are working in conjunction with bicycling organizations to bring the event to CSU, an event Anderson said has the potential to draw spectators from around the region.
