Day and night mingle as elegant meets casual

Day met night on the runway Friday as New York Fashion Week drew to a close.

There were evening touches on daywear, such as a metallic sheen on a tweed suit or a turtleneck worn under a strapless dress, and daytime accents for evening, like a chunky knit cardigan or hunting jacket over a silk dress.

At Ralph Lauren, a fisherman vest with all-over pockets was worn over slim cashmere-herringbone skirt suit, and a flannel plaid shirt was paired with a three-tiered embroidered black skirt.

Hate Mail: Are you staring at my nose?

Probably because the alternative is another knucklehead like Freeman or Prisco.

From: Elstunn

I will say this: You do paint a great dog house.

Readers will have to read last week's Hate Mail to get that one. Nicely done, Elstunn. As an aside, my favorite college basketball player as a kid was Elston Turner from Ole Miss. Aside finished.

From: Paul

You attacked Jim Calhoun for playing Marcus Williams back in 2006. Well, now with UConn needing wins, Calhoun has suspended Jerome Dyson and Doug Wiggins. It's time to give Calhoun an apology.

You're right, so here it goes: I'm sorry, Jim, it took two years for you to realize I was right.

Here from beginning to the end

It was 1935 and Birmingham and the country were in the thralls of the Great Depression.

During that economically challenging time then-Birmingham Post Editor Jimmy Mills knew the newspaper had to do more than deliver printed words and bold headlines to the public. Many families, after all, couldn't afford to put food on the table, much less buy a newspaper.

So Mills started the Goodfellows program which bought candy and fruit for needy youths. It evolved into a program that delivered fruit and toys to needy Birmingham-area around Christmas each year.

It would be the Post's, later to become the Post-Herald's, first foray into community service, but not its last.

Since then, the Post-Herald has sponsored various community service projects from the State Spelling Bee to the All-State Academic Team to the Kudzu Run and Car Show to the Distinguished Teachers Awards to the Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Bicyclist fined $1,050 for traffic infraction

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Kajuan Cornish didn't know he was such a danger on his bicycle, and now he's facing hefty fees that could have paid for him to have a car.

One day after Gov. Timothy M. Kaine admitted the state's so-called abusive driver fees had failed and called for them to be repealed, Cornish was ordered to pay a fee of $1,050 for recklessly operating his 18-speed Huffy in an intersection during rush hour.

"A bike with pedals -- a 4-year-old can ride a bike," Cornish said Thursday. "I could see it happen if I'm riding the wrong way down the expressway -- that's dumb."

Cornish, 19, doesn't drive and was convicted of reckless driving in Newport News traffic court for a ticket he received after riding his bike across Warwick Boulevard.

The sentence of the Inquisition was (1) he was ordered imprisoned; the sentence was later commuted to house arrest; (2) his offending Dialogue was banned; and in an action not announced at the trial, publication of any of his works was forbidden, including any he might write in the future. On 31 October 1992, Pope John Paul II expressed regret for how the Galileo affair was handled, and officially conceded that the Earth was not stationary, as the result of a study conducted by the Pontifical Council for Culture. Talk about slow actions.
