Don Weiner, Cisco: In a word, yes. Toll fraud and telabuse are real threats to any telephony system. Mechanisms must be available to prevent callers from transferring out of voice mail systems to world-wide destinations (an early form of toll fraud). Mechanisms must be available to restrict users from forwarding their phones to just anywhere. Users must be educated, through regular sessions (at least annually is recommended), on social engineering techniques designed to trick a user into revealing privileged information or enabling toll fraud (for example, transfer a caller to a remote destination).

A Roanoke group is launching a bicycle-sharing program that would let people sign out two-wheelers at between five and 10 area businesses and organizations to ride wherever pleasure or work takes them. The not-for-profit venture, called Sharebike, is partly modeled on others that have moved scores of people in Europe and in U.S. cities such as Portland, Ore., and mobilized students on college and university campuses, including at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. Last summer Paris, yes, the city of light, put 10,000 public-use bicycles on its streets. The goal is to provide inexpensive, environmentally friendly, calorie-burning transportation for people who don't drive, prefer not to or don't need to for where they are going. But other such enterprises have struggled with bike theft, abuse and breakage.

Phishers refine tactics to leverage social networks and increase efficiency -- The tactic of using multiple URLs in phish attacks continued to slowly decline in Q4 2007. -- Phishers leveraged popular social networking sites to harvest personal information and launch highly targeted, personalized attacks. -- The integration of a telephone component to attacks, or vishing, became more visible in Q4 2007 as well as phishing through SMS (text messaging), or SMishing. "Tracking trends over the course of a year shows that criminals and fraudsters around the world continue to develop new and adaptive ways to take advantage of brands," said Frederick Felman, chief marketing officer for MarkMonitor. "Fighting brand abuse can be a daunting task for brandholders of all sizes. The rewards of an effective brand protection strategy are evident for great brands - their respected reputations, valuable customer relationships and formidable revenues." The Brandjacking Index is an independent report produced by MarkMonitor that tracks and analyzes abuses of 30 brands from the Best Global Brands study by Interbrand.
Pride strong at CSU Homecoming parade
Crisp morning air welcomed hundreds of students, alumni and residents of all ages in Old Town Fort Collins Saturday, as they gathered for the annual Colorado State University Homecoming parade. The sea of green T-shirts and CSU gear showed support for the football team and generated community support. Festivities kicked off on Howes Street and Mountain Avenue, with the CSU cheerleaders, colorguard and marching band in-step with the thunderous echo of the drums. .
Veteran who faked hero status sentenced to jail

Inland factories slow production, index says
The slowdown washing over Inland Southern California's economy may be filtering down to the manufacturing sector, a report released Friday showed. The Purchasing Managers Index, which measures factory activity in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, declined to 46.6 in January from 50.9 in December, the Institute of Applied Research and Policy Analysis at Cal State San Bernardino reported. A reading below 50 suggests that the factory sector is contracting, although economists look for three consecutive months before considering it a trend. The Inland PMI has showed manufacturing growth for most of the past four years. .
