Amgen Tour, USA Cycling, USADA team up for rigorous drug-testing ...

The 2008 Amgen Tour of California will boast the most comprehensive anti-doping protocol in competitive cycling, organizers proclaimed on Tuesday.

The announcement comes one year after the premier U.S. stage race drew criticism for pursuing a relaxed testing campaign.

“We believe that an aggressive approach to having a clean and fair race is essential to restore the credibility of top-tier bicycle racing," said Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports, during a press conference at the ADT Event Center velodrome in Carson, California.

Joining Messick in the announcement were Steve Johnson and Sean Petty of USA Cycling; Bob Stapleton, owner of Team High Road, Mari Holden, former world time-trial gold medalist; and Anthony Butch, director of UCLA's Olympic Analytical Laboratory.

Glucometers are not precise

I have asked four doctors this question and can't get an answer. If I take my blood for a sugar test from my left index finger, the reading is 15 to 30 points higher than it is from the blood in my right index finger. Doesn't blood have the same concentration of sugar in all the body?

R.T.

Dear R.T.: That letter was printed a few months ago. I didn't have an answer for the lady. I asked for help, and many wrote, including doctors and engineers. I appreciate the response, and now I do have an answer.

Home blood sugar monitors -- glucometers -- have made it possible for diabetics to gain strict control of their blood sugar and lessen the chances of diabetes complications. They provide an immediate and convenient blood-sugar reading so that the diabetic can adjust diabetes medicines or food intake.

Professor Austyn Mair

The outbreak of the Second World War shaped Austyn Mair's life. Working in the aero-engine department of Rolls-Royce in Derby at the time, he was commissioned in the RAF and sent to the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) at Farnborough. There he spent the rest of the war working on the design and commissioning of wind tunnels, testing model aircraft and investigating their performance in the race to keep ahead of German technical developments.

He also made measurements on fighter planes flown by test pilots, including captured reconstructed enemy aircraft. In the early summer of 1945 he was sent to Germany to discover what developments had been made there in aircraft and rocket technology. At the end of the war he transferred his experimental investigations to the academic world, firstly at Manchester and then Cambridge.

YMCA offers new activities for 2008

There are two Cardio Waves, which are workout machines designed to move multiple planes of the body. These new machines came in August, but the floor was recently refurbished. "A lot of members say they get a great workout on the Waves," Bremmerkamp said. "It's a very effective piece of equipment for the glutes and core muscles."

There are also six Excite Treadmills, and all of the new equipment have personal TV screens with 32 cable stations. They also have various pre-programmed workouts, personal fans and a touch-screen.

"It's nice to see the community is willing to provide this kind of quality," said Eric Rhea, a Carthage resident using one of the treadmills.

Bremmerkamp was most excited about a new program for members; the Y's Way to Weight Management.

Kaufman County sheriff candidate indicted on oppression charges

Frankum called it "dirty tricks" in January when a warrant was issued for his arrest in a separate case based on allegations that he had stolen police equipment from his former department.

Mr. Frankum, who was expected to turn himself in on Monday, did not return calls for comment.

David Montague, spokesman for the Tarrant County district attorney's office, confirmed Monday that a grand jury on Feb. 7 indicted Mr. Frankum on three counts involving two complainants, whom Mr. Montague declined to identify.

Mr. Montague said he did not know when the original complaints that led to the indictments were made or whether they originated with an agency other than the district attorney's office.

All the incidents allegedly happened between February and August 2006 while Mr. Frankum was employed by the Police Department in Pelican Bay, a town of about 1,600 northwest of Fort Worth in Tarrant County.
