Romney throws his support to McCain

Why has he not spoken out when the people involved are close to home? All this talk about McCain's integrity is totally overblown. He is a politician above all and , regrettably, like most Republicans (and Democrats), he posesses absolutely no vision for America or the world in the 21st Century. There is nothing new here…only a re-hash of what is obsolete and in fact dangerous. Worst of all, his nomination is a reflection of the current state of thought of a large percentage of Americans.

Bike-theft suspect hangs self in hospital

A Longview man who faced multiple charges for allegedly stealing a string of expensive bicycles throughout the Northwest killed himself Saturday morning in a Longview psychiatric hospital where he'd been admitted after two previous suicide attempts.

Jacob J. Bos, a 35-year-old podiatrist, was the subject of a Page 1 story Friday in The Seattle Times.

Longview police spokeswoman Deborah Johnson said Bos committed suicide at St. John Medical Center in Longview at 6 a.m.

Bos hung himself with a belt in a hospital bathroom, according to Dr. Richard Kirkpatrick, who owns the clinic where Bos worked.

Bos had pleaded not guilty in Cowlitz County Superior Court to 12 counts of possessing or selling stolen bikes.

Seattle police arrested him last month after they traced him through DNA on a coffee cup left at a Fremont bicycle shop, where he'd allegedly stolen a $6,800 bike, and on another occasion, a $5,500 bike.

Young entrepeneur vies for £20,000 prize

A TRAINEE architect who hopes to develop a new bicycle security product has been named one of Britain's top 10 student entrepreneurs.

Anthony Lau, of Lakeside, Beckenham, is in the running for the £20,000 first prize in the new HSBC Unipreneurs Awards.

His invention, Cyclehoop, has already out-performed entries from hundreds of young business hopefuls.

The device allows cyclists to lock their bikes on signposts.

The 26-year-old trainee architect, who is doing a part-time architecture course at the University of Westminster, said he hoped his invention would encourage more people to cycle.

He said: “It's essentially a steel hoop that clamps onto signposts and turns the post into a bicycle rack. People use street furniture to lock their bikes anyway, but the problem is they can fall over and cause an obstruction, and people can steal them by lifting them over the signpost.

U.S. BMX Team Gearing Up For Olympics

Some think it will be the summer equivalent of snow boarding, which debuted in 1998 and has since become an overwhelming crowd favorite.

There?s a California man who's guiding a team of riders towards Beijing on a brand new state of the art track in Chula Vista, California.

Mike King is a former world champ and now the director of U.S. Olympics BMX programs.

He said, "Everyone is saying that BMX is the new it sport for the summer games and I have to agree with them. I would've loved to have had the opportunity, but at the same time I?m just as excited, if not more, to watch these guys progress over time."

The U.S. team is one of the deepest in the world and will have an overwhelming advantage heading into Beijing.

That's because a new track in southern California is set for completion any day now.

Happy All-Star Break: Denis Savard, Brent Sutter Call Out Their ...

When Denis Savard and Brent Sutter were teammates on the 1996 Blackhawks, I wonder if they ever thought they'd be coaching in the National Hockey League at the same time. Beyond that, I wonder if they ever imagined they'd throw their players under the bus on the same night. After Chicago's 1-0 loss to Columbus last night, Coach Savard went rip city on a number of unnamed players that the team has committed to via long-term contracts, but whom he feels have not committed to paying the price for victory: "They were very happy when they signed it ... Well, commit to us, commit to the jersey, commit to the people here. They don't want to commit to the Indian, let's go upstairs and get them out of here ... The message of (Chairman Rocky Wirtz, President John McDonough and general manager Dale Tallon) is pretty clear: We're here to win the Stanley Cup.

ACTU pleads for rate rise amnesty

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is being urged to consider the plight of working families when deciding whether to increase interest rates this week.

Analysts say higher than expected December quarter inflation figures and solid domestic demand give the RBA a strong case to increase interest rates at its board meeting in Sydney tomorrow.

If the bank's board does decide to raise rates, they will be at their highest level in 12 years.

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) says low and middle income families cannot afford another rise, and the RBA should hold rates at current levels until the full impact of the global financial situation becomes clearer.

ACTU president Sharan Burrow says many families already have their finances stretched to the limit by mortgages, credit cards and other loans, and the RBA should look at other economies.

In Boston, Mayor and Librarian Clash Over Control

Margolis and some of his allies, who say it could have a chilling effect on donors and even lead to the money being spent outside the library system.

"It gets to the very core of the independence of the library trustees and the basis on which people give money to the library," said Mr. Margolis, who will step down in June after 11 years on the job. "They give it with the expectation that the library is the steward of that money and of the institution's destiny — not with the expectation that the mayor or someone else downtown decides how or when it's used."

But Dot Joyce, a spokeswoman for Mr. Menino, said the city did not intend to use the library trust funds for other purposes, and had no right to do so. "We would never be able to do that," Ms. Joyce said. "We only want to make sure the money is being used for what the people who left it to the library intended it for."

Surprise Result: Fray Posters Love Slate

In the end, they won 9, just over 25 percent. Worse, the only places where it ended up that the Republicans were even close to getting a 10th or 11th seat were in states that currently had Republican Senators, Missouri, Montana and Virginia. On top of that, in the two states that were supposedly plausible Republican pick-up opportunities, Maryland and New Jersey, they ended up getting beaten handily, by 11 and 8 points respectively.

The point that may be overlooked here is that the Republicans thought, going into this election cycle, that they had a fair chance of keeping even or possibly gaining seats. Allen was supposed to be a dead lock, and a potential Presidential candidate, Steele was supposed to siphon off lots of black votes, particularly after Mfume didn't win the Democratic primary; Kennedy was supposed to be a rising star running against a so-so Democrat in Minnesota; and Chafee was both much beloved in Rhode Island and one of the rare Republicans who'd opposed the Iraq war.
