82% of Canadians would rather work than retire: poll

When my husband announced he was retiring, many of his co-workers asked him where he was going to work. The expectation was that he would find another job elsewhere...

When he said he wouldn't get another job, people were shocked and asked "but what will you do??" His answer "anything I want."

'Runway's' fabulous accessory

Requests to talk to Garcia did not yield an interview, alas. The blog has been profitable, filled with ads, though ridiculously time-consuming and not profitable enough to quit their day jobs, they say. Plus, it's painfully seasonal. Major withdrawal ahead, as the show's finale is Feb. 27 and March 5. Designers Jillian, Christian, Chris and Rami are still in. T Lo, as they're collectively called, say they watch the show in their pajamas with wine and cheese and a couple of friends, on a vintage '60s daybed covered in brown velvet and a generous amount of pillows, in their cozy sloped-ceilinged third floor. They are online about 16 hours a day. They watch each episode six times. The morning after a show, with impatient e-mails pouring in ("C'mon boys, wake up!"), Lorenzo approaches Tom for their Project Rungay staff meeting.

The Fountain Pen

A new electronic voting system has been installed at Guelph's city hall. The new system allows members of council to vote in favour or against a motion by pressing the appropriate button. An overhead screen then displays how each individual voted. All votes other than procedural motions are recorded, and the meeting minutes show how each member voted.

Previously, votes were only recorded when requested by a member of council. Non-recorded votes were taken by a show of hands and not listed in the minutes. Thus, there was no record of how councillors voted. In the case of recorded votes, the Clerk had to call each member's name and manually record his or her vote. The electronic system will enable members of Council to vote simultaneously. The system also eliminates the potential to mis-hear voice votes or mis-count hands.

NYPD DAILY BLOTTER

A man was stabbed multiple times in a Lower East Side nail salon yesterday morning, police said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was knifed at the Kevin Nail Salon at Clinton Street and East Broadway around 10 a.m.

He was treated at Bellevue Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses said cops arrested the stabber shortly after the incident in his nearby apartment.

QUEENS

An unlicensed massage therapist molested a woman during a rubdown in Flushing, authorities said yesterday.

Yong Tao, 27, allegedly fondled the victim twice last month while giving her massages to treat her scoliosis at a facility on Roosevelt Avenue near Main Street.

Tao, arrested Tuesday, is charged with eight counts of sexual abuse and unauthorized practice, according to a spokeswoman for DA Richard Brown.

Salmond in ‘sleaze’ row over calls and Trump meetings

McConnell not only did not follow the advice, he hired a helicopter to take Trump's representatives on a tour of the site. Alex Salmond has strictly followed the legal advice given despite the obvious advantages on not following that advice. He could have ignored the advice, as it is only an opinion, and involved himself in the debate. He chose not to. He could have taken a public position that would garner him enormous support and VOTES in his own constituency. He chose not to do so. He could have followed the path of the First Minister of Northern Ireland and lobbied hard for the project, but he chose to not do so. His actions have consistently placed the position of FIRST MINISTER above that of Alex Salmond, MSP. That is called Leadership, Integrity and Accountability. .

WCC WOMEN: CONFERENCE PREVIEW

One team, the conference tournament champion, goes the NCAA Tournament and everybody else goes back to the drawing board.

A team-by-team look, in The Chronicle's predicted order of finish:

Gonzaga (9-6): Injuries have affected Gonzaga, which was 13-1 in winning the WCC last season. Without Bowman, the Bulldogs are 4-4. With her, 5-2. Sophomore forward Vivian Frieson missed seven games with a broken finger, but is back in the lineup. Gonzaga leads the WCC in scoring at 76.3 points a game.

San Diego (9-5): The Toreros, 21-9 last season and 10-4 as the conference runners-up, open WCC play on a roll, winning five of their last six. The only loss came on a last-second shot against No. 15 Texas. San Diego has one of the conference's best tandems in junior center Amanda Sprague and senior guard Amber Rego, last year's conference co-Player of the Year.

In our view: Common sense is the best reason to applaud helmet law

If you have wheels under you, better have a helmet over you. That’s the message from the Vancouver City Council, which on Monday passed a law requiring helmets on riders of bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, roller blades, scooters and unicycles on public streets, sidewalks and trails.

The helmet law is the first in Clark County but is similar to regulations in Seattle, Spokane and Tacoma. We hope Clark County commissioners and other cities in the county follow suit.

Both supporters and opponents of the helmet law are able to debate this topic ad infinitum, and anecdotal references often cloud their arguments, but our preference is to rely on basic common sense. It just stands to reason that riders of these wheeled implements should be required to wear helmets in public places for reasons of public safety.

PGI keeps out HIV+ patient

We were asked to go to the clinic at room no. 3027of the new OPD. We kept waiting from 8.30 am. My daughter-in-law started feeling uneasy, said Gurdev Kaur, mother-in-law of the patient.

At noon when my daughter-in-law began vomiting, I went to Dr Archana in the clinic, requesting her to attend the patient. She refused, saying she had to see a patient at the emergency and left. Till 2.30 pm, there was nobody at the clinic.

Chet Singh of Kuraiwala village in Muktsar, accompanying the patient and the mother-in-law, alleged that a patient from Tanda Urmur waiting for his turn at the OPD had died yesterday.

Doctors on duty at the emergency ward later confirmed to this correspondent that the patient from the OPD had been brought dead.

Dr Archana B. Mohan, SMO of the National AIDS Control Organisation being run from the PGI, denied any such incident.
