| Counties draft plan on bike accident liability
Bicycle riders would be unable to collect damages from a county or city for most accidents under legislation that the Iowa State Association of Counties has drafted for state lawmakers' consideration. Counties or cities would not be liable for injuries or damages resulting from bike accidents on their roads unless it was shown that government officials were notified of a road deficiency before an accident and that road crews neglected to take action, according to the legislative proposal. .
Good news from Iraq!
Things are so much better now that we have worked out all those messy civil unrest details in Pakistan and have the freely-elected Pakistani administration rooting out Osama Bin Laden, the true and actual mastermind of 9/11. No need to worry about those Pakistani nukes falling into the hands of Islamic radicals. And those crazy Afghans have calmed down, too. The Taliban comeback has been squashed, the drug trade has been eliminated and Afghans are free to live without the permission of brutal regional warlords. Meanwhile, all is well at home where we finally have in place port security, border security, natural gas depot and nuclear power plant security, transmission line security, school security and that nifty threat scale that makes life so colorful.
Myers will start Phillies’ opener
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Brett Myers will be the Phillies' opening-day starter on March 31 against the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park. Cole Hamels will pitch Game 2 against the Nationals. Though Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said today that Myers was chosen for matchup purposes, it wouldn't be surprising if the club awarded Myers the start for loyalty reasons. The Phils moved Myers, last year's opening-day starter, from the rotation into the bullpen early last season. Myers fell in love with the closer's role, but the Phillies returned him to the rotation this spring after acquiring closer Brad Lidge in a trade with the Houston Astros. Hamels went 15-5 with a 3.39 ERA last season, his first full season in the majors. Myers won a career-best 14 games as a starter in 2003.
Roadworks put brakes on drivers' first toll-free crossing of bridge
The tolls were an ideal way of ensuring that those who used the bridges paid for them. When the Tay Bridge tolls were introduced, the half crown cost was equivilant to the price of getting in the boys gate at Dens Park. Now, the cost of crossing would purchase half a programme. Can you imagine the furore, if free rail travel were introduced for all, with the cost to be borne by the taxpayer? It is a cheap stunt, which in the grand scheme of things means little - and something free from politicians? Don't make me laugh! .
DNA matches, CCTV film and a pattern of sightings - the case against ...
Nicholls also had hyper-inflated lungs and bruising, but significantly, the QC told the jury, there was no evidence of drag or scratch marks on her body, suggesting her body had not been dragged through undergrowth. There was, however, a scratch on her face which could have shed blood "which may be highly significant". Paula Clennell, 24 Paula's body was discovered some hours before the finding of Nicholls, on December 12, though she had not disappeared until two days after her, on December 10. She had died, the court heard, as a result of compression of her neck, consistent with being strangled in a headlock, though she had also taken a significant dose of opiates. Clennell's body was not posed, but appeared to have been "hurriedly dumped", a few hundred metres away from that of Nicholls.
The Empire strikes out, and sports will be the downfall
Welcome to the decline and fall of the Roman empire, U.S. edition. Remember the great Roman empire? Its decline was not caused not just by greed, lust and indifference to civic virtues. Its decline — and you could look this up, except you won't find it anywhere — was caused by an unhealthy preoccupation with sports. The Romans became so lazy and soft and wealthy, their way of life crumbled as they filled local arenas for chariot races, gladiator fights and the occasional Christian fed to the lions. Sound familiar? Their empire and our empire have scary similarities. In ancient Rome, public executions were held at midday; in modern America, we have "The Jerry Springer Show." You think the emperor Romulus Augustulus was worried about crumbling roads and growing crime? No.
Poor Snow Energizes Bike Park Expansion
WHISTLER, British ColumbiaWhistler Blackcombs winter season may be in full swing, but Rob McSkimming is already busy preparing for when the snow melts. McSkimming, vice president of business development at Whistler Blackcomb, is investigating the price of earth-moving equipment and looking for machine operators. McSkimming heads up the resorts Gravity Logic division, which leverages its bike park expertise to help other resorts develop theirs. And Gravity Logic is looking like it will have a very busy spring. There is going to be a huge push developing bike parks over the next few summers and we may be looking at buying earth-moving machines and hiring our own operators to help resorts get the trails in quickly, McSkimming said. Normally, our staff helps out working with local people, but given the number of resorts hurrying to get trails in, I think there could be a shortage of machine operators, he added.
